an historic day at the vatican. the first vote has just passed in the process to pick a new pope. what was said last hour in the search for a missing east bay woman. and there's news from the red planet today -- at noon.

watching the vatican and what just happened on the roof. the selection of the new pope is the top story. good afternoon.

i'm tori campbell. catholics around the world continue to wait for word out of vatican city on who will succeed pope benedict xvi. but as you saw, just about 15 minutes ago, we started seeing this -- thick, black smoke, emerging from the chimney on the sistine chapel. that means the first round of ballots cast did not result in a two-thirds majority decision which is needed to select the next pope. we'll be going live to rome for an update but first, craig boswell has a report on the start of the papal conclave. >> reporter: a puff of smoke will be the next news we get from the vatican as the cardinals decide on the next pope. cardinals are celebrating their first public mass before going into the sistine chapel. they are hearing a final appeal. and cardinal angelo delano said

they will work tirelessly during this process. >> translator: let us pray the new pope can continue on this world level. >> i think many hope it won't be too long. >> reporter: this was the first, the resignation of pope benedict xvi, in many years. the job is not expected to be an easy one. >> it would be crazy for anyone to want to be pope. it's an office of tremendous sacrifice. i'm sure they are in fearful awe, even terror about the possibility of them coming out as the new pope. >> the cardinals are not obligated to vote on the first day but as we saw, they did. it takes a two-thirds majority to elect the next pontiff. many catholics were waiting outside the sistine chapel for

the first time of a decision which we saw. they released black smoke. they add chemicals to the smoke to make it black. it's dark in vatican city. they are eight hours ahead. it's just after 8:00 there in the evening. thousands of people though did remain in st. peter's square to watch the copper chimney on the roof for the puff of smoke. and when the smoke is white in future votes in the next day or two, that means the church has a new leader and a bell will be rung to eliminate any uncertainty, and eight years ago there was question about whether the smoke was white or black. a special mass here was held at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco to pray for those choosing a new pope. ♪ >> this is a very active and exciting time for catholics, just a few days ago they were

praying for the outgoing pope benedict xvi. this morning, the archbishop prayed for vatican city and the election of a new pope. >> i think that's the excitement about this, there's really no headliner. there's nobody that's favored going into this conclave as there was the last time around. so anything could happen. >> reporter: this was not the only special mass this morning. the officer of bishop called for all -- the archbishop called for all special masses today. some say they want change and others say they want the leader to remain tra dish nal. >> i would love any pope that comes to carry on the tradition of the church and adapt it in the way that's best for the modern world. >> it's really important. again, we need a leader. we need somebody, someone to look up to. >> as we reported a few minutes

ago, the cardinals have cast their first ballots and informed the public with black smoke that they've not yet picked a pope. leaders of a christian priest high school in pleasanton are responding this afternoon to disturbing allegation against a teacher. the woman is accused of tying up a young student. ktvu's alex savidge is live in pleasanton to explain how this incident came to light and he just learned more information on this situation. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: well, good afternoon, tori. i just got an e-mail from the state's community care licensing agency. their records identify this former teacher in this case as angela kalkano. the state says she's been barred from work, at any school until this investigation is resolved. administrators here at this christian preschool in pleasanton say the former teacher bound the hands and feet of one of her students. pleasanton police have launched a criminal investigation focused on a former teacher at

center point christian preschool identified today through state records as angela kalkano. she resigned last week before the allegations came to light. she's accused of using masking tape to bind the wrist and anksles of -- ankles of a -- of a 2-year-old girl who didn't want to take a nap. >> it's absolutely deplorable to that any person, including the children under our care, would in any way do something so terrible as this incident. children are made in the image of god and deserve to be fully respected and this is a dehumanizing incident that we're greatly grieved over. >> reporter: the state's community care licensing agency issued a violation notice against center point last week after -- center point last week after learning about the incident. the school will not have classes for five days in an

effort to retrain the staff members. everything came to light when the former teacher showed the photo of the bound child to members of the school, one of them happened to be that little girl's mother. her parents have since decided to pull her from the preschool. but the church has still been reaching out to her. >> i talked to the family. they are devastated. any family would be devastated and we are caring for them in the best way possible. >> reporter: church leaders also said today that some parents have decided to pull their children from center -- center point preschool. we did put a call into pleasanton police. i was not able to talk to anybody about this case and any charges this former teacher may face. as we bring you out here live, center point church inside this area, they will be holding a special eggs session for parents to answer any question

-- special session for parents for any questions that they have. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. police say 24-year-old sabrina bell kicked a little girl in the cleft at the playground about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. bell also allegedly threatened to kill other children before she was stopped. the toddler who is not quite 2 is recovering. >> the police say the victim and her family were in the bay area for a wedding and the toddler was supposed to be a flower girl. turning back to the vatican now, cardinals from all around the world are now choosing a new pope and we have seen the first signs of progress in their deliberations. reporter leland vittert is live from rome. leland, we just saw some black smoke. no new -- no new pope selected. what's happening now? >> reporter: the cardinals, all 115 of them, took their first vote of the can clave, we only

have one vote here on tuesday. they now head back to the vat cab residents. they are still under -- vatican residences. they are still under secrecy. they cannot talk about what happened inside the sistine chapel that led up to the black smoke. they can talk among themselves, about votes, what factions will join together now to try to figure out who the next pope will be. will it be somebody like timothy dolan out of new york or perhaps an italian pope bringing the papacy back to italy after the past two popes were not from italy that a number of people are upset about. a number of people had filed out. they went near to watch -- there to watch. and tomorrow morning, they will head back into the chapel.

they take the vow of secrecy and begin to vote all over again. tomorrow, which is wednesday in rome, there are going to be four separate ballots. it gives you a sense of the amount of excitement on the streets and also uncertainty. people want to know who this person is going to be. it's about 45 degrees and poring down rain, st. peter's square was still packed. they are certainly expecting more people to come out tomorrow and watch on the jumbotron and watch the imchimney that's ill -- watch the chimney that's illuminated and watch for that smoke. tori? >> is the feeling there, the new pope will be someone from europe or possibly someone from outside of europe? >> reporter: that is sort of the amazing part about this and

what makes it so hard to all right on. the only people who know they've sworn to god that they are not gonna talk to anybody about it. vatican watchers spread the gamit ut. the odds on -- gamut. the odds on favorite is milan. when we say odds on favorite, it's not like last time that ratzinger was the guy who had it to lose. there's no one like that that has that kind of lock going into it. we could be here a few days. there's a number of people who say it could go a couple of more days this time as they try to narrow the field down to who they are going to pick and perhaps pick someone who is not one of the favorites going forward. >> we'll have to wait and see. leland vittert, reporting live outside of the vatican. thank you. and stay with us.

the search for an oakland bomb who disappeared last weekend -- woman who disappeared last weekend after going out for a walk, there's new information about this. here's sal castanedo. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. family members say erica maskaleris was feeling better after challenging times. they say she was not depressed. they also say it's unusual for her to be gone this long without checking in. the search for 31-year-old erica maskaleris continues. family members say it's been an emotional time. >> our family is struggling right now, emotionally and physically. we're all very tired and this ordeal has taken a tremendous toll on all of us.

>> reporter: maskaleris has been missing since thursday. family members say they became worried after she failed to make a flight to see her brother in texas on friday. the last image of her was taken thursday morning at this bakery on telegraph. it shows her dressed in workout gear on her daily walk. maskaleris says he was looking forward to seeing her and she seemed to be in a cheerful mood when they spoke on the phone the night before. >> i told her what to pack. >> reporter: fends and family are continuing to -- friends and family are continuing to canvass neighborhoods, putting up fliers, offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to her reward. >> we know she is alive. we know she could not have disappeared on her own. that was not like her. we know that someone saw something. >> reporter: now, at first, the family had been critical of oakland police saying they did

not respond quickly enough for the missing report but now they say they are doing a good job. they want anyone who has seen erica maskaleris to call the oakland police. live in oakland, sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. president obama when to capitol hill and personally met with senate democrats today. it was the first of three scheduled visits to capitol hill in the coming days with much of the discussions likely focused on the budget. senate democrats are scheduled to unveil their budget plan tomorrow for the first time in now years. the proposal raises taxes on top earners, spends more on domestic programs and does not balance the budget. it's unlikely to be supported in the gop-led house. house republicans, meanwhile, unveiled their proposed budget today. they say it will balance the books without raising taxes. congressman paul ryan says the plan will eliminate the annual deficit by 2013. >> we think we owe the country a balanced budget.

i have two sons that i don't get to see because i'm out on the street. >> city leaders hope to increase enforcement at encampments provide more affordable housing and help nonprofits move people indoors. that's made a big announcement share -- that's made a -- nasa made a big announcement today. janine de la vega reports the red planet might need a new nickname. >> reporter: nasa scientists know that mars should not be called the red planet. "curiosity" drilled a hole in the planet and discover what was hiding underneath. >> drilling down just a few centimeters and hitting a completely different planet, really, a gray planet instead of a red one wases is powering. >> reporter: pouterred rock was scooped up and after the sample

was taken, they examined the chemicals. >> the elements for life seemed to be there. we haven't checked off all of them but most of them. most importantly, water was there, in the form of mud. >> reporter: parachutes used to land the rover were tested. scientists watching the announcement of the discovery say this is an exciting find and it proves their hard work has paid off. >> the instrument is just working beautifully. it's a credit to the very talented teams that worked hard on not only making this stuff but making it robust and making it work in this very difficult environment. >> reporter: scientists plan to explore in the coming weeks. there's talk of sending humans there. it takes three days to get to

the mon but it would take -- moon but it would take six months to get to mars. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. unseasonably warm weather will remain in the forecast for today. outside our doors, our skies are turning blue. giving au live look at the -- you a live look at the bay bridge from san francisco. lingering fog just inside the bay. that fog actually dealt us a little bit of a draw back in the sense of keeping those temperatures down. some of us is, a few degrees cooler at this hour than we were 24 hours ago. here's a time lapse, you can see in the last couple of hours, the fog began to shrink. it remains inside the bay and coastline at this hour. it looks like it took until about 11:00 before it cleared from napa, portions of the east bay, this is where it stands right now, just inside the bay. still hugging the coast. noticing santa cruz you are clearing ut -- clearing out

fairly well. outside our doors, at this hour, when it comes to our temperatures, if you got the sunshine sooner, you are in the 60s. 66 walnut creeks. 68 in livermore. but take a look at the napa airport. i think it was at 11:00 that i saw the clouds clearing from her. so far airport only with an hour of sunshine -- so napa airport only within an hour of sunshine. the satellite radar outside of the low cloud deck, just a few high clouds streaming true over this ridge of high pressure that continues to keep the storms well to the north. washington picking up a little bit of rain for today. oregon is dry. we'll remain this week through the week ahead. afternoon highs for today, 73 in kentfield. 72 san rafael. san rafael, a little tough to clear this morning. you are cooler than you were 24 hours ago. 76 expected for napa. 75 for walnut creek. 75 pleasanton. upper 60s to low 70s around the

stocks are mixed on wall street. the dow looks determined to keep pushing to new record highs, following a 7-day rally. they've been bouncing around a little bit. right now, the dow is up almost 10, at 14,427. the nasdaq is down, 9 and s&p is down -- slightly down about 2. authorities in iran are planning to sue hollywood over the movie "artwo." iranian officials say the movie was an unrealistic portrayal of the country. the decision became after movie critics and officials screened
